Executive coaching, a compass in the fog?

The questions every CEOs asks himself

“Am I doing the right thing? “How do I get out of this situation?” “Do I really need to keep going in this direction?” ”

These are the types of questions that all business leaders ask themselves on a regular basis,

Those sleepless nights thinking about, with the “hamster spinning in its wheel”,

These moments “caught in the guts”, asking yourself “What's the point? ”,

And always, to be alone, in the face of unanswered questions.

The loneliness of the leader

The solitude of the CEO is an intimate experience that is difficult to share...

Being a business leader means:

  • the responsibility of having to make strategic decisions that are engaging for the future of the company, and, more particularly, for all employees,
  • the confrontation with the unknown, with uncontrolled risks... even unpredictable,
  • the awareness of not having everything under control, having no choice but to decide,
  • the “Rabbit in the headlights” syndrome: The fear of profound change, of the paralyzing unknown, while being certain that by not changing anything, the company is going against the wall,
  • ... and there are so many other situations.

And then, faced with all these fears, there is the need to “fulfill your role” as a Leader with teams that trust.

  • To be the one who stays the course, by wind and tide.
  • Not being able to “put the armor down.”
  • Not being able to share your doubts or uncertainties, so as not to let doubts arise among the teams.

The essential role of the executive coach

As I recall all these situations, I appreciate the essential role of the “executive coach”, for the success of any entrepreneurial project, regardless of the size of the company.

The coach is:

  • The one you can talk to without a second thought
  • One who intimately understands what one is experiencing in the moment, for having experienced it himself.

One who, through his own experience, and his detachment from the contingencies of daily life, can provide insight, a lead... open a door that was hidden until then...

“A coach? why do it? I am a CEO, I don't need to be coached! ”

What if in fact, precisely, it was the CEO, the one who carries the vision and the ambition, who most needs to be coached for the success of his company?

A very particular coaching, specific to the profession of CEO...

The “Executive Coach.” This trusted peer, who embodies a lived experience rather than a certificate

Professional coaching: a trend?

“Professional coaching” has been in fashion in recent years.

There are many courses that allow you to become a “certified coach”, mainly focused on personal development and behavioral aspects: communicate well, manage interactions and conflicts, develop your managerial skills,...

Whether internally within large groups, or via freelancers for smaller structures, management and team coaching, which allows the improvement of relational relationships, the development of “soft skills” or better team cohesion, is essential for the well-being and commitment of employees.

However, this type of coaching does not really address the fundamental challenges of the CEO mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Lived experience: the key to executive coaching

  • Because the intimate, profound experience of the leader can only be understood by a person who has experienced it themselves.
  • Because a business leader will only dare to “fall his armour” and reveal his questions and fears in relation to a peer.
  • Because no training or certificate can replace the lived experience of the CEOloneliness in the face of strategic decisions, uncertainty or the feeling of loss of control.

The parallel with top-level sport

For any top athlete (regardless of their individual talent, physical preparation or competitive experience), success and self-improvement require input from outside themselves.

This is the role of the sports coach, this former top athlete,

  • Able to “experience” in the moment and intimately what the athlete experiences in competition,
  • Able to understand his pain, his suffering, his moments of doubt,
  • Able to find the words that sound right, at the right time,
  • Capable of bringing this external perspective built on the basis of one's own experience,

The CEO is this top athlete. The executive coach is this former athlete.

“I've done pretty well so far. The company has developed well, I can be proud of the progress made... but the future seems much more uncertain... so what do I do? ”
“It's shaking in every way, I'm being challenged internally and externally, and frankly, I'm not at all sure I'm on the right track... What if I was completely wrong? ”
“The world is getting so complex... can I really still predict or anticipate anything? ”

How do you navigate the fog in a world of growing uncertainty and fluctuations?

2020. COVID crisis. An unprecedented global systemic crisis.

It is no longer possible to ignore the globalized context of uncertainty in which businesses operate.

Economic, geopolitical, social and environmental uncertainties...

An intertwining of uncertainties that generates a situation of polycrisis, or even systemic “permaccrisis”.

The scale and suddenness of the COVID crisis in 2020 took most leaders by surprise.

Although the acute phase of this health crisis is behind us, we continue to evolve in an extremely uncertain global economic context, full of geopolitical, environmental or societal “shocks”.

The question is not whether there will again be a global systemic crisis of the magnitude of 2020 in the near future, but rather when and in what form it will occur...

And so for CEOs, how can they best prepare their business?

The sudden storm of 2020 was followed by a thick fog that is not about to disappear, and which requires navigation “by instinct”, in the middle of reefs that we know exist but without having a map.

Now more than ever, and probably more in the future, leaders need to develop a talent for constant adaptability, constant listening to weak signals, and the ability to react in real time.

The challenge for businesses is no longer a search for the best possible performance, but an ability to combine this performance with robustness and flexibility.

From a racing driver, the CEO now becomes a navigator, explorer, adventurer...

What if we took the time to talk about it quietly over coffee?
